When thinking about starting a walking program, it is important to consider why you want to walk as well as the possibly benefits:

  • Burns calories
  • Strengthens back muscles and bones
  • Tones legs
  • Slims your waistline
  • Allows you to spend time with friends and family
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Allows you to sleep better
  • Helps reduce stress
  • Requires no equipment (other than a good pair of walking shoes)
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Can improve your mood
  • Can be done inside or outside
  • It’s free!

Here are some other tips to consider for your walking program:

  • Walking shoes should fit well, have a low heel, be flexible, be lightweight and breathable material.  Walking shoes should be replaced every 3 to 6 months.
  • Remember to write down the reasons you want to walk (to keep you motivated) and possible obstacles (to work on)!
  • Be careful to include warm up and cool down stretches before and after walking.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after walking.
  • If you are trying to lose weight, try walking 5 days/week for 20-30 minutes at a fast pace.
  • Remember one pound of body fat is 3500 calories!
  • Walking can done before work, during your lunch break or after work (at a park, inside a shopping mall or around your neighborhood)!
